Egyptian, Greek and Roman Art
Ancient Egyptian art is a period that spans 50,000 BCE up to 300 CE, and is a form of art and architecture developed by the civilization in the lower Nile Valley. Canonically, however, most recognizable Egyptian art was developed between 3000 BCE up to the 3rd Century. It is characterized as being a highly symbolic and stylized form of artistic expression. Due to lack of outside influence, Egyptian art remained largely unchanged over that 3000 year period.
Roman art refers to art produced in Ancient Rome and its territories. While most surviving forms of Roman art suggest Grecian influence (many Roman mosaics were copied from Greek originals), Roman art is actually an amalgam of many different cultures, including Etruscan and Egyptian. However, many of the art techniques used by the Romans, such as mosaic, cameo, trompe l'œil, etc., were first developed by the Greeks. In fact, greek art and architecture has influenced many cultures, both past and present. (Nearly every artistic technique used by the later Renaissance painters, with the exception of oils and linear perspective, have also been used by Greek painters.) Both Roman and Greek art use a variety of subjects, including animals, portraits, scenes from everyday life, mythological themes, and landscapes.
