Early Renaissance Art

Renaissance was an artistic and cultural movement that began in Florence, Italy, in the beginning of the 15th Century. Many revolutionary painting techniques began to emerge and develop during this period that would differentiate Renaissance paintings from earlier periods of antiquity, such as the use of linear perspective, tonality, as well as treatment of shadow and light. It was also during this period that artists were introduced to the use of oil paint. Early Renaissance is usually defined as being between 1400 to 1475, and is marked by the work of artists such as Fra Angelico, Masccio, and Verrochio, among others.
