Neo-Classicism

Neo-Classicism is a European art movement that began during the late 18th Century to counterpoint the flamboyant, and what was perceived to be overindulgent Baroque and Rococo styles. The Neo-Classic style is a revival of the aesthetic ideals of Ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture, utilizing sharp colors, strong contrasts between light and shadow (chiaroscuro), and incorporation of classical Greek or Roman elements and motifs (i.e., pose, anatomy, dress, hair, setting, etc.).

Neo-Classicism continued into the early 19th Century, until its decline with the development of Cubism and Expressionism.

Neo-Classicism has also been used to describe similar revivals during the 1920's and 1930's.
