Impressionism

Impressionism, derived from Claude Monet's "Impression, Sunrise," is a 19th Century art movement. Impressionism can also describe art created in the same style and technique, despite being outside of the 19th Century time period. Impressionist techniques are visually evident and easy to identify: visible, thick brush strokes of pure unmixed color, creating a vibrant effect, and capturing the essence of the subject matter rather than focusing on minute details. Impressionists often painted outdoors to capture the effects of sunlight on their subjects, favoring candid compositions and natural poses, giving their work a sense of movement and immediacy.
