Symbolism

Symbolism was first coined by Jean Moréas, a French literary critic, in 1886. It was later applied to describe an art movement during the same period.

Symbolism uses religious, mythological, and literary subjects, stressing emotional and psychological content. The style may employ classic painting techniques, but is easily identifiable by its interest in mystical, bizarre, erotic, convoluted and morbid subject matter.
